Next up in our Meet the COG series is Nicole Powell!
Nicole is the Lead Investigative Agent for the COG and she was interviewed by Claudia Fetter.
How did you get started on your current career path?
Nicole’s degree is in education, but she has never worked in that field. When she started college there was a teacher shortage, but that was no longer the case when she graduated.
So, at 21 she applied for and got a job at the Blanchard Valley Center, working for the county board of DD. She has had many different roles and levels of responsibility and worked for several county boards prior to coming to the COG, but has never wanted to change her chosen field. She celebrates 25 years working with and for persons with developmental disabilities.
How do you unwind?
Nicole unwinds by hanging out in her backyard pool. Her dream was to have a pool and now she does. You might find her swimming or just floating around and relaxing. She also enjoys sharing her pool with family and friends. She has no real desire to travel or go away on vacation. Her favorite vacation spot is her own backyard.
She and her husband also have four pets which they love: two dogs and two cats. The dogs are Newfoundland’s and are considered water dogs, but she said they don’t particularly like the pool. All of the pets’ names start with “T”. Tonka and Tank are the names chosen for the dogs because they are BIG!
What do you do for fun?
Antiquing and going to flea markets is what Nicole and her husband love doing together. Denny’s the primary antique collector. He not only collects antiques, but enjoys displaying them in their home. Nicole, however, gravitates toward vintage Fisher Price toys and Snoopy collectibles.
She shared that her three year old granddaughter, Harper, likes going with her Mamaw to flea markets and is becoming quite skillful at spotting Snoopy items from her stroller. Harper also thinks the Fisher Price toys are hers and, of course, she gets to play with them!
What is something about you that might surprise people?
I don’t like or participate in any type of social media. I am a very private person and do not see any benefit in sharing personal information with the public.
